Improvements

Over the last five years, Smugglers Cove Estate has undergone a rebirth in both design vision and mechanical systems. The grounds received a light touch by Land Morphology which opened up space and increased sunlight, while improving the connection of the outbuildings to the site plan, creating more opportunities for recreation. A new pickleball court installed in 2024 is tucked away tastefully behind berms of waving grass and seamlessly connects to the great lawn. The reflecting pond was enhanced with 1000s of plantings along enveloping berms, reviving the metaphorical heart of the property that sits below an ancient cedar tree.

Most significantly, the main residence has been overhauled with new and improved mechanical systems underneath a masterful remodel by renowned interior designer Christian Grevstad. Provence Antique Field Tile limestone floors are warmed with in-floor hydronic heat in the kitchen, sun room, and primary bath. White oak floors have been refinished to enhance the gentle natural light that fills the home. Solid White Oak cabinetry by Jonathan Paul is boldly contrasted with custom blackened steel accents and is found in the kitchen, butler’s pantry and walk-in pantry. Carrara Lincoln Marble can be found throughout the home, from the impressively oversized kitchen island to the primary bath’s double vanities.

An iconic sun room, featured on the cover of a national design magazine, has blossomed into a room that is comfortable year round, and is often the gathering spot before and after dinner parties, with an entertainers’s bar and walls of windows to take in the ambiance provided by the abundant greenery just outside.

Interior Designer Christian Grevstad is a master of light and texture, a quality uniquely important to the NW Contemporary style. The Arts & Crafts style of the building’s architecture resonates with a shared heritage, focused on function, need and simplicity, with a strong emphasis on harmony with the natural environment. Artisan Kathy Connor created smooth-faced plaster finishes to bring nuance to interior spaces while also lending a confident but gentle tone to the living room fireplace and raised kitchen fireplace surrounds. The stairway leading to the primary suite showcases a hanging pendant chandelier from Haberdashery of London. Warm walnut shelving of the library retains its air of history and is a great place for concentration or relaxation. A motorized TV that lowers and a convenient gas fireplace make cozy movie nights nearly irresistible.

Some upgrades are less evident yet no less dramatic, such as Lutron lighting and invisible speakers built throughout the home. With property-wide wifi and Sonos, you can control the vibe across all 21 acres right from your phone. Electrical and plumbing received an overhaul. Water softener and filtration systems offer on-demand hot water. And in the kitchen, help yourself to on-demand cooled sparkling water from the tap. The property’s water comes from a private well, updated with a brand new pipe and pump in 2025. The backup generator is new and ready for years of service. Acres of lawn and landscape are irrigated and select tree specimens such as centuries old Big Leaf Maples are subtly lit with ‘moonlight’ landscape lighting which help visually navigate the property while allowing the stars to remain center stage.

In The Studio outbuilding, a full kitchen has been installed. It’s a wonderful resource for catering extensive formal events or hosting fun cooking parties where making a mess is encouraged, and cleanup is easy. There isn’t a project that can’t be tackled in this creative space.

In addition, a one bedroom cottage and cozy stone house offer more room to spread out, host, or enjoy as you please. The cottage has a wood burning stove, pocket kitchen with oven and stove, 3/4 bath and full laundry. The stone house has a wood burning stove and 1/2 bath and is located across the lawn from the sun room.
